The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (SHA) will begin a bridge rehabilitation project on US 40 (National Pike) over Conococheague Creek in Hagerstown, Washington County. The bridge, originally constructed in 1936, is safe but requires updates to its roadway surface and support columns. The project is part of SHA’s effort to maintain Maryland’s transportation infrastructure in a state of good repair, improving safety and reducing future maintenance costs.
An update to this bridge closure is available in a newer article.

Pre-construction work is set to start in spring of this year, with the bridge closure and detour beginning in June after the school year concludes. Due to the bridge’s design, a detour is necessary. The detour route will guide traffic along MD 68, I-70, and MD 63, using only state-maintained roadways. The project is expected to be completed before the 2026-2027 school year begins.
The SHA aims to preserve the historic integrity of the concrete arch bridge while meeting modern safety standards. The project will also include improvements to the Wilson Park kayak launch area. A public meeting will be held in April to provide more information to the community.
