Ford Motor Company has issued a safety recall for 18,648 EcoSport vehicles from the 2021-2022 model years, citing a potential defect with the vehicle’s transmission. The affected vehicles, equipped with a 6F15 automatic six-speed transmission, were manufactured between April 1, 2021, and July 20, 2022. The recall, identified as NHTSA Recall No. 25V-126 and Ford Recall No. 25S12, involves concerns over the front halfshafts not being fully inserted into the transmission.

The defect poses a safety risk as it could lead to a loss of motive power if the vehicle is in motion or potentially cause a vehicle rollaway when placed in “Park” without the park brake applied. Ford attributes the issue to manual assembly challenges, including high insertion forces and limited hand clearance. Inconsistent use of processes to detect incomplete insertion during production may have contributed to the problem.
Owners of affected vehicles will receive mail notifications beginning April 7, 2025, instructing them to bring their vehicles to a Ford or Lincoln dealer for an inspection. If a halfshaft is found not to be fully inserted or retained in the transmission, it will be replaced at no cost to the owner. Dealer notifications are expected to be completed by March 3, 2025, with the owner notification period scheduled to end by April 11, 2025.

The recall addresses the potential hazards of the halfshaft’s splines wearing out or the halfshaft moving out of the transmission, which could result in a dangerous situation while driving or when the vehicle is parked. The company advises affected vehicle owners to contact their local Ford or Lincoln dealer or use the Ford On-line Automotive Service Information System (OASIS) to determine if their vehicle is part of the recall.
The EcoSport is no longer in production, and Ford has implemented measures to correct the assembly process moving forward. Owners can also reach out to Ford’s toll-free line at 1-866-436-7332 for more information on the recall.
