The fire originated in the engine compartment of a 1982 Case 580 K backhoe, which was started by the owner, Wetzel Malcomb, to let it warm up. When the owner returned, he found the equipment on fire. As he went into his home to call 911, the fire spread to surrounding areas, igniting a nearby shed and approximately 10.5 acres of woodland.
The Clear Spring Volunteer Fire Company responded to the blaze with 31 firefighters, taking 2.5 hours to bring the fire under control. The preliminary investigation determined the fire was accidental, and no injuries were reported. The backhoe fire caused an estimated $20,000 in structural loss, with an additional $10,000 in damage to the shed and other contents.
