Mercedes-Benz USA has initiated a recall of 20,339 S-Class vehicles from model years 2021 to 2023 due to a potential brake hose defect that could lead to reduced braking performance and an increased risk of a crash.

The recall affects specific models including the 2021-2022 Mercedes-Maybach S 580 4MATIC, 2022 Mercedes-Maybach S 680 4MATIC, 2021-2022 Mercedes-Benz S 500, 2021-2023 Mercedes-Benz S 580 4MATIC, and the 2023 Mercedes-Benz S 580e 4MATIC. The vehicles were produced between June 20, 2020, and March 23, 2022.
The issue stems from the brake hoses on the front axle, which may leak over time when used in hot and humid environments. This could lead to a brake fluid leak, potentially compromising the performance of one of the two brake circuits in the vehicle. The defect was identified through empirical data analysis, showing that vehicles outside the affected production range have brake hoses that meet durability specifications. The failure mechanism does not provide an early warning to the driver, but if the defect occurs, a red brake fluid warning message might appear in the instrument cluster.
Mercedes-Benz AG (MBAG), the vehicle manufacturer, first became aware of the issue in late 2023 through individual reports. Initial parts were analyzed by the supplier, Continental Automotive Technologies GmbH, and durability tests were conducted using test vehicles. Although early analysis suggested external factors might be causing the damage, further testing in 2024, including endurance and climatic influence tests, did not reveal any manufacturing deviations. However, additional durability tests indicated that the brake hoses could endure up to ten times the normal driving stress. Despite this, the recall was initiated as a precautionary measure.

Authorized Mercedes-Benz dealers will replace the front axle brake hoses of the affected vehicles at no cost to the owners. The company plans to notify dealers on March 3, 2025, and owners will receive notifications before April 25, 2025. Since the vehicles remain under the new vehicle warranty, there will be no reimbursement notice for pre-notice repairs.
