After more than three years in detention, Belarusian journalist Andrey Kuznechyk has been released from prison following diplomatic efforts led by the Trump administration and the Lithuanian government. Kuznechyk, a web editor for Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty’s (RFE/RL) Belarus Service, was imprisoned in November 2021 on charges related to his work for an independent media outlet. His release marks a significant development in ongoing international efforts to support press freedom in Belarus.

Kuznechyk was initially detained while on a bike ride near his home in Minsk and was sentenced to two consecutive 10-day administrative terms for “hooliganism.” In December 2021, Belarusian authorities escalated his case, charging him with “creating or participating in an extremist organization.” He was convicted in June 2022 and sentenced to six years in a hard labor colony following a brief trial. His appeal was later denied in a closed-door hearing. His case became emblematic of Belarus’ broader crackdown on independent journalism, with the government labeling RFE/RL’s Belarus Service an extremist organization and targeting those associated with it.

The Belarusian government has systematically repressed independent journalists, revoking media accreditations and imprisoning reporters. RFE/RL journalist Ihar Losik remains behind bars, having been detained since June 2020. Kuznechyk’s release comes amid increasing international calls for press freedom and human rights protections in Belarus. His recognition as a political prisoner and recipient of the David Burke Distinguished Journalism Award underscored global concerns over his imprisonment.

Following diplomatic negotiations, Kuznechyk was freed on February 12, 2025. His release was facilitated through the intervention of U.S. President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, with key support from the Lithuanian government. The Trump administration’s efforts reflect its continued engagement in securing the freedom of detained journalists abroad.
