Fogel’s case had drawn significant attention, with calls for his release spanning multiple administrations. His return fulfills a promise Trump made to Fogel’s 95-year-old mother, Malphine, during a meeting in July 2024.

Fogel, a Pennsylvania native and former teacher, had been detained in Russia on drug-related charges in 2021. Despite repeated appeals, he was not classified as “wrongfully detained” under previous administrations. His release was met with bipartisan praise, with lawmakers and officials across party lines expressing relief that he is finally back on American soil. His family, who had campaigned tirelessly for his return, described his release as the end of a painful chapter.
Trump administration officials, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, credited the president’s decisive action for securing Fogel’s freedom. Rubio emphasized that this marks the tenth American brought home from overseas detention since Trump took office in January 2025. Witkoff reiterated the administration’s policy of ensuring no American detainee is left behind.

Pennsylvania politicians also welcomed Fogel’s return. Governor Josh Shapiro thanked those who worked to secure his release, while Senators John Fetterman and Dave McCormick joined in celebrating his homecoming. Republican Representative Mike Kelly recalled Trump’s personal commitment to Fogel’s mother, while Representative GT Thompson and former U.S. Ambassador to Russia Michael McFaul praised the administration’s efforts.
Fogel’s case has drawn comparisons to other high-profile detentions of Americans abroad, highlighting the complexities of diplomatic negotiations. His return signals a continued focus by the Trump administration on repatriating U.S. citizens held overseas.
