Illegal immigration at the southern U.S. border saw a significant decline in January, coinciding with President Donald J. Trump’s return to office and immediate policy changes aimed at border security. According to newly released Customs and Border Protection (CBP) data, total apprehensions for the month fell to 61,465, marking a 36% decrease from December. This figure includes 29,116 apprehensions along the border, the lowest since May 2020, and 32,349 encounters at ports of entry.

The downward trend continued following Trump’s inauguration on January 20. Between January 21 and January 31, U.S. Border Patrol apprehensions along the southwest border dropped 85% compared to the same period in 2024, according to data obtained by ABC News. Migrant encounters at ports of entry also fell by 93% in the 11 days after Trump took office.
During the previous administration, monthly illegal border crossings in January averaged 141,710, as policies allowed many migrants to remain in the U.S. indefinitely. The latest figures suggest a sharp reversal, with a renewed focus on detaining and deporting those entering the country illegally.
