A Middletown woman has pleaded guilty to felony theft after stealing $65,000 from a friend under false pretenses to cover court-ordered restitution from a prior theft conviction. Cheryl Leigh Gray, 50, entered the plea in the Circuit Court for Frederick County following an investigation led by the Maryland Attorney General’s Fraud and Corruption Unit and the Maryland Insurance Administration.

Gray had previously been convicted in an April 2024 felony theft case related to her work as an insurance producer. At sentencing, she had already repaid $305,995.55 in restitution but was still required to pay an additional $63,536.46 as a condition of her supervised probation after release. To obtain the remaining amount, Gray deceived a friend by claiming she needed funds for medical treatment when, in reality, she used the money to meet her restitution obligations.

Gray’s sentencing for the new theft charge is scheduled for March 17, 2025, in the Circuit Court for Frederick County. Maryland Attorney General Anthony G. Brown acknowledged the efforts of his Criminal Division, including Fraud and Corruption Unit Chief Alex Huggins and Assistant Attorney General Timothy Lake, in prosecuting the case. He also credited Maryland Insurance Administration Forensic Auditor Suzzanne Jones, Investigator William Wagner, and Frederick County State’s Attorney J. Charles Smith III for their assistance in the investigation.
