The Town of Williamsport has finalized the acquisition of the historic Springfield Manor House, reuniting it with the Springfield Barn for the first time in nearly three decades. Originally the country home of General Otho Holland Williams, the founder of Williamsport and a notable Revolutionary War brigadier general, the estate has hosted prominent historical figures, including George Washington. The Springfield property includes the founder’s mansion, various historic outbuildings, and centuries-old witness trees that have stood through key moments in American history. Notably, the distillery on-site is believed to have influenced Washington’s own distillery at Mount Vernon. The estate was also visited by Betsy Bonaparte, adding to its status as an early American cultural and political landmark.
The Town of Williamsport plans to transform the reunited estate into a heritage tourism destination, offering visitors a glimpse into life from colonial times through the early republic. Plans include restoring historic structures, developing accommodations, and integrating the site with the ongoing revitalization of downtown Williamsport, as well as the nearby C&O Canal headquarters and trails.

Officials aim to collaborate with historians, economic development groups, and preservation organizations to ensure the project’s success. Funding efforts will include seeking historic preservation grants to support restoration initiatives. With the acquisition finalized in February 2025, revitalization planning is set to commence in the summer of the same year. The Town encourages residents and history enthusiasts to stay updated on the project through its website and social media channels.
