Volvo Trucks North America has issued a recall for 13 of its 2023-2025 VNRE (Electric) heavy-duty vehicles due to a potential fire hazard linked to defective batteries. The recall, designated as NHTSA Recall No. 25V-055, involves vehicles equipped with BorgWarner Akasol Gen 3 battery packs, which were found to have manufacturing defects that could lead to short circuits and thermal events. The issue stems from improperly torqued hardware within the battery packs, which may become loose and cause internal damage.

The affected vehicles were produced between June 1, 2022, and July 3, 2024. The defect was first identified following a thermal runaway incident on an uninstalled battery in Egypt. Initially, the faulty batteries were believed to be limited to a facility in Darmstadt, Germany, but subsequent investigations confirmed that suspect battery packs had also been produced at BorgWarner’s Hazel Park, Michigan, plant and supplied to North America. Although no accidents, injuries, or warranty claims have been reported, Volvo has decided to proceed with the recall as a precautionary measure.

Volvo Trucks will replace the defective battery packs with units that do not exhibit the identified manufacturing issue. Any vehicles under Volvo’s control with affected batteries will remain on hold until the replacement is completed. Dealer notifications began on February 5, 2025, while owner notifications are scheduled for April 6, 2025. The recall and replacements will be covered under Volvo’s reimbursement plan on file with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
