Kia America has initiated a recall for 80,255 vehicles across its 2023-2025 Niro lineup, citing concerns over a defect in the floor wiring assembly beneath the front passenger seat. The defect, related to variations in wire routing, could lead to failures in airbag deployment, unintended airbag activation, or improper suppression of the passenger frontal airbag for smaller occupants, increasing the risk of injury.

The recall includes specific Niro EV, Niro Hybrid, and Niro Plug-in Hybrid models manufactured between June 2022 and December 2024. Repeated adjustments to the manual front passenger seat in these vehicles can cause damage to the wiring, potentially triggering the airbag warning light as an indicator. Kia has identified variance in wiring routing as the primary cause of the issue.

To address the problem, Kia will inspect and, if necessary, replace the floor wiring assembly in the affected vehicles. Dealers will also reroute the wiring and apply protective coverings to prevent further damage. Notifications to vehicle owners are scheduled to begin by mail on March 14, 2025.
