The decision to ban TikTok in the United States has sparked significant debate about the balance between public safety and individual freedoms. While concerns over national security and data privacy are valid, this move establishes a troubling precedent, echoing past policies that sacrificed civil liberties under the guise of protection. Examples such as the authorization of warrantless wiretapping through the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) courts illustrate how such measures often lead to the erosion of fundamental rights without sufficient oversight or accountability.

First they came for Kaspersky, and I didn’t speak up because I didn’t run an Antivirus company. Then they came for TikTok, and I didn’t speak up because I don’t run a social media platform. Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

For over a decade, I refrained from publicly commenting on Edward Snowden’s revelations about the U.S. government’s mass surveillance programs due to the potential impact on my federal contract employment. Now, with that chapter behind me, I feel compelled to share my perspective. Snowden’s disclosures, while controversial in their method, revealed systemic violations of privacy, including the NSA’s collection of vast amounts of data from unsuspecting Americans. Although I disagreed with the manner in which he exposed these activities, the content of his revelations was far from surprising due to my time as a Federal contractor, yet still very concerning. They highlighted the steady encroachment on civil liberties in the name of national security, a trend that the TikTok ban dangerously perpetuates.

EDITOR’S NOTE: At no time did I, or anyone else at Radio Free Hub City, work with Snowden or have access to the same information he did.

The TikTok controversy reflects a broader pattern of using national security concerns to justify sweeping actions that disproportionately restrict freedoms. Reports have already highlighted instances where government agencies, including the FBI, exploited surveillance powers in ways that violated Americans’ privacy rights. As seen in prior cases, such measures often lack transparency and open the door for misuse. By targeting a widely used social media platform, the government risks normalizing the suppression of digital expression and information sharing under the pretext of security.

Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.

Benjamin Franklin

Critics of TikTok have cited its potential connections to the Chinese government as justification for the ban, raising concerns about data collection and foreign influence. However, this rationale ignores the broader implications of banning a major platform used by millions of Americans for self-expression, education, and entertainment. Restricting access to information and communication tools sets a precedent that could be used against other platforms in the future, expanding the scope of government control over online spaces.

When fundamental liberties are traded for perceived security, the loss is often irreversible. Decisions such as the TikTok ban and warrantless surveillance should compel us to scrutinize the long-term consequences of prioritizing safety over freedom. These actions serve as a reminder of Benjamin Franklin’s cautionary words about the balance between liberty and security—a balance we must carefully preserve.
