The WEP and GPO were provisions that reduced or eliminated Social Security benefits for individuals who also received pensions from employment not covered by Social Security taxes. By abolishing these provisions, the new law ensures that public sector retirees receive full Social Security benefits in addition to their public pensions.
While the legislation addresses long-standing concerns about benefit reductions for public servants, it introduces additional financial strain on the Social Security Trust Funds, which are already facing potential insolvency by 2035. The Congressional Budget Office estimates that this change will accelerate the depletion of the retirement trust fund by approximately six months.
