The fire originated in the ceiling area of the home’s bathroom and was determined to have been caused accidentally by a malfunctioning bathroom light and exhaust fan. The homeowner, who was awake at the time, noticed smoke in the residence and promptly called 911. Firefighters from the Clear Spring Volunteer Fire Company responded swiftly, controlling the fire within 10 minutes of arrival. A total of 33 firefighters participated in the operation, which involved one alarm.
Investigators reported that the home lacked functioning smoke alarms, which could have provided an earlier warning. In the aftermath, the Office of the Maryland State Fire Marshal and the Clear Spring Volunteer Fire Company have offered to install smoke alarms in the residence before it is reoccupied. The homeowners are currently staying with family members as repairs are arranged.
