In a new development regarding a previous article, Kraft Heinz has discontinued its school-specific Lunchables from the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) due to limited demand. Introduced in 2023, these kits—Turkey & Cheddar Cracker Stackers and Extra Cheesy Pizza—were specially reformulated to meet USDA nutrition requirements. The adjustments included increasing protein and incorporating more whole grains into the products.

Despite meeting NSLP guidelines, the products faced criticism for containing elevated sodium levels and other ingredients considered less nutritious. Consumer Reports and other advocates highlighted concerns about their suitability for school meals, calling for stricter federal standards.

The removal of Lunchables from the National School Lunch Program comes after advocacy groups, including Consumer Reports and More Perfect Union, pushed for its exclusion. Concerns centered on the suitability of the kits for low-income students relying on free and reduced-price meals. In September, these groups submitted a petition to the Department of Agriculture with nearly 50,000 signatures, urging stricter nutritional standards for school lunches and emphasizing the need for healthier options in federally assisted meal programs.

Kraft Heinz stated that the school-targeted Lunchables represented less than 1% of total sales and had minimal impact on the company’s overall business. While the kits will no longer be offered through schools, the brand’s grocery store products remain popular, offering a wider variety of options not bound by NSLP guidelines.
