The conference aims to address the growing complexities of securing critical infrastructure in an increasingly interconnected environment, where systems and networks span vast geographic areas and are vulnerable to a range of physical and cyber threats.
The tabletop cybersecurity exercise will bring together participants from federal, state, and local agencies, focusing on a coordinated response to cybersecurity incidents that affect critical infrastructure. Open to all conference attendees, the exercise is designed to enhance collaboration and strengthen the nation’s defense against cyber threats.
A tabletop exercise is a discussion-based simulation used to assess and improve an organization’s readiness for various scenarios, such as natural disasters, cyberattacks, or other crises. Unlike live simulations, a tabletop exercise does not involve physical deployment of resources. Instead, participants engage in a guided discussion, working through hypothetical scenarios to test decision-making, coordination, and response strategies.

During these exercises, participants review and discuss their roles and responsibilities in response to a simulated incident, identifying gaps in preparedness and areas for improvement. The goal is to foster greater understanding of how different agencies and organizations can collaborate effectively in the face of cybersecurity threats. By simulating real-world challenges in a controlled environment, tabletop exercises provide an opportunity for participants to evaluate their response plans, assess risk management processes, and identify areas where communication and coordination can be enhanced.
The upcoming exercise at the AFCEA conference will emphasize critical infrastructure protection, highlighting the importance of cooperation among public and private sectors to mitigate cyber risks. Through these discussions, participants will work together to explore potential solutions, improve readiness, and contribute to building more secure and resilient infrastructure systems.
