The indictments stem from allegations that Powell submitted fraudulent insurance claims under her renter’s policy with United States Automobile Association (USAA). According to the charges, Powell filed claims in December 2020 and November 2022, asserting that a broken pipe in her primary suite bathroom had caused flooding. She claimed the flooding damaged various personal belongings, including furniture, electronic devices, clothing, purses, shoes, and jewelry.

In the 2020 claim, Powell reportedly received a payment of $58,373 from USAA. For the 2022 claim, Powell alleged property damages amounting to $124,034. However, USAA denied this claim after discovering discrepancies. It was found that Powell had not reported any broken water pipes or water damage to her landlord. Further investigation revealed that the invoices and receipts Powell submitted were either fake or altered, and the photos provided as evidence of the damage were not taken in her home.

Powell is scheduled for an initial appearance in the Circuit Court for Prince George’s County on July 26, 2024. The case underscores the serious nature of insurance fraud and the efforts of law enforcement to hold individuals accountable for such actions.
