MARYLAND News (7/3/2024) – Motorists should brace for heavy traffic on the Bay Bridge and along the US 50 corridor from Wednesday, July 3, through Monday, July 8. The Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) anticipates significant delays in both directions as travelers head to and from the Eastern Shore for the holiday weekend. To avoid the worst of the congestion, drivers are advised to travel during off-peak times.

Traffic Management and Safety Measures

To alleviate congestion, MDTA will implement two-way operations on the Bay Bridge when possible. This involves using one lane of westbound traffic to accommodate eastbound traffic. However, these operations depend on traffic volumes and weather conditions. Two-way operations are suspended during high winds, fog, rain, or other adverse weather conditions, and during any incidents on the bridge.

Motorists are reminded to stay on US 50 on both sides of the bridge to keep local roads clear for emergency responders and residents. Exiting US 50 to avoid traffic not only disrupts local traffic but can also lead to increased delays.

Safety Reminders

Motorists must adhere to overhead lane signals on the bridge:

  • RED X: The lane is closed. Do not enter or travel in this lane.
  • YELLOW X: Prepare to vacate this lane and move to one with a downward green arrow.
  • DOWNWARD GREEN ARROW: This lane is open for travel.

MDTA Police and other law enforcement agencies will be patrolling the bridge and surrounding areas to enforce traffic safety and respond to any incidents. Aggressive or dangerous driving can be reported to MDTA Police Dispatch at 410-537-7911.
