MARYLAND News (6/13/2024) – House Republicans have introduced a budget proposal that aims to thwart the planned relocation of the FBI headquarters to Greenbelt, Maryland. This action challenges the General Services Administration’s (GSA) November 2023 decision to select Greenbelt as the site for a new, modern FBI facility.

The GSA’s selection of Greenbelt, which is conveniently situated near the Metro station, was influenced by factors such as lower costs, enhanced transportation access, and considerations of financial equity. The site was chosen over other contenders in Landover, Maryland, and Springfield, Virginia.

Under the Republican budget proposal, federal funding would be restricted to either keeping the FBI at its current Pennsylvania Avenue location in Washington, D.C., or moving it to another federally owned site within the District of Columbia.

The ongoing investigation continues to cast uncertainty over the future of the FBI headquarters, keeping the debate alive and unresolved.

While the decision to move to Greenbelt has been praised by Maryland officials for its potential economic and infrastructural benefits, it has met with skepticism from Virginia lawmakers. These lawmakers, supported by a bipartisan group, have questioned the fairness of the selection process. In December, they urged the U.S. Office of Management and Budget (OMB) to pause the relocation.
