The incident occurred when the hiker fell, sustaining injuries that necessitated immediate medical attention. Given the challenging terrain and the projected difficulty of a ground extraction, Garrett County rescue personnel requested aerial assistance.

Trooper 5, an MSPAC crew based in Cumberland, was dispatched for the mission. Pilots skillfully maneuvered the AgustaWestland AW-139 helicopter to hover above a riverbank, allowing a Trooper/Paramedic to be lowered to the hiker’s location. Once the hiker was secured and prepared for aerial extraction, they were airlifted to UPMC Western Maryland in Cumberland for medical treatment.

The MSPAC, operational since 1970, plays a crucial role in Maryland’s emergency response infrastructure. The command operates a fleet of 10 AW139 helicopters from seven bases across the state, ensuring round-the-clock coverage for both residents and visitors. The agency’s responsibilities encompass medevac services, law enforcement support, search and rescue operations, homeland security tasks, and disaster assessment.

The success of MSPAC missions is often a result of collaboration with local fire, rescue, and EMS teams, as well as law enforcement agencies. Additionally, partnerships with federal entities such as the U.S. Coast Guard and the U.S. Park Police enhance the command’s ability to effectively respond to emergencies.
