UPDATED 4/25/2024 with additional information from Town of Boonsboro

BOONSBORO, MD News (4/25/2024) – In response to the recent passing of Police Chief Kevin Morgan and subsequent staffing challenges within the Boonsboro Police Department, the town has engaged MTAC, a local security company, to provide temporary coverage. However, the move left several critical questions unanswered regarding the scope and authority of MTAC’s role in policing the community.

MTAC, a Maryland-based security firm renowned for its comprehensive security services, has been tasked with filling the void left by Chief Morgan’s absence. Under the approved 60-day interim emergency coverage agreement, MTAC personnel will conduct vehicle and foot patrols throughout Boonsboro, bearing the company’s distinctive logo on their vehicles.

The Town of Boonsboro provided responses in an email to Radio Free Hub City to several questions regarding this arrangement.

According to Kimberly A. Miller, Interim Town Manager of Boonsboro, The Mayor and Council of Boonsboro discussed proactive measures to enhance public safety following Police Chief Kevin Morgan’s passing and staffing shortages. A Closed Session Meeting was held on April 15th, with further discussion planned for the Workshop Meeting on April 29th at 7pm. MTAC will serve in a deterrent capacity as Security Guards and won’t have the authority to issue citations or make arrests. MTAC officers will be armed as stated in the agreement which was provided to Radio Free Hub City, and available for download below.

While the deployment of MTAC security officers aims to bolster public safety, the initial absence of clear guidelines regarding their powers and armament raised legitimate concerns among residents. Hopefully, now that the agreement has been clarified, residents’ minds can be put at ease.

The collaboration between Boonsboro and MTAC underscores the imperative of ensuring continuity in public safety services, and will hopefully be only a temporary measure until Boonsboro can resolve their police staffing shortages.
