BOONSBORO, MD News (3/6/2024) – Spring in Boonsboro heralds the grand opening of the Boonsboro Community Garden on April 6, 2024, at 12 noon, marking a significant moment for local residents. Located behind Pavilion 4 and the Boy Scout building in Shafer Park West, this initiative promises to foster community engagement and promote healthy living.

The inauguration will feature a ribbon-cutting ceremony alongside engaging activities such as a vegetable plant giveaway and an opportunity for attendees to engage in a Q&A session with a Master Gardener.

The genesis of this community garden dates back to July 2022 when residents received a questionnaire in their BMUC bill envelope, seeking feedback on the proposed project. The Boonsboro Environmental Commission (BEC) spearheaded the endeavor, envisioning a space that not only encourages gardening but also cultivates connections among townsfolk.

With the support of the Nora Roberts Foundation’s grant funding and the contributions of local volunteers like William Duus and Grant Hausler, the garden boasts features like secure fencing, a greenhouse, toolshed, and various raised beds suitable for different abilities.

Construction, set to commence in Spring 2023, will transform an unused space in Shafer Park into a vibrant hub for communal gardening. This venture aligns with the town’s commitment to inclusive and accessible recreational facilities.

Residents keen on participating in this green initiative are encouraged to visit the Town’s Community Garden webpage for more information and to apply for a plot reservation for the upcoming season.

More information is available at the town website.
