HAGERSTOWN, MD News (3/19/2024) – Washington County Public Schools (WCPS) has once again surpassed its previous records for kindergarten readiness, marking a significant achievement for the educational institution. The results from the state’s Kindergarten Readiness Assessment (KRA) conducted earlier this fall reveal that 55% of WCPS students enrolled in kindergarten for the 2023–2024 academic year demonstrated preparedness for school. This accomplishment positions WCPS as the fourth-ranked school district in the state based on the percentage of young learners deemed ready for kindergarten.

Superintendent of Schools, David Sovine, attributes this success to the concerted efforts of various stakeholders within the WCPS community. Sovine notes, “WCPS has made great strides in recent years to ensure our youngest learners are adequately prepared for kindergarten.” He highlights initiatives such as the universal pre-k program, collaboration with private pre-k providers, and comprehensive professional development opportunities for pre-k educators as instrumental in driving these positive outcomes.
One notable aspect of WCPS’s achievement is its performance relative to statewide averages. With 55% of kindergarten students demonstrating readiness compared to the statewide figure of 44%, WCPS continues to outpace the state average, showcasing sustained improvement. This trend is particularly evident following the resumption of in-person learning after the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The data further underscores the effectiveness of WCPS’s pre-k programs in fostering kindergarten readiness. Analysis reveals that students who participated in WCPS pre-k exhibited higher rates of readiness compared to those who did not. Specifically, 66% of students who completed WCPS pre-k were deemed ready for kindergarten, while only 34% of non-WCPS pre-k students achieved readiness. This trend indicates the positive impact of early childhood education on academic preparedness.
Sovine expresses gratitude to the various stakeholders involved in supporting pre-k initiatives, including teachers, support staff, school leaders, families, and community members. He emphasizes the critical role of pre-k and kindergarten in laying the groundwork for students’ academic success and lifelong learning trajectories.
