HAGERSTOWN, MD News (11/16/2023) – A wildfire blazing across the mountains of northern Virginia has led to an influx of smoke in the valleys of western Maryland, resulting in elevated fine particulate concentrations. The overnight and early morning surface inversions have trapped the smoke, contributing to the heightened levels of particulate matter in the affected areas.

Meteorological experts anticipate an increase in mixing heights during the late morning and early afternoon hours as temperatures rise, aiding in the dispersion of the smoke. However, a 24-hour average is expected to show High Moderate levels of fine particulate concentrations in the areas directly impacted by the wildfire.

In regions outside the immediate vicinity of the wildfire, some haze may be visible in the skies, linked to the smoke, but it is not anticipated to have a significant impact on air quality. As a result, air quality conditions are expected to range from Good to low Moderate in these areas.

A shift in southerly winds overnight Thursday into Friday is forecasted to bring another wave of wildfire smoke to the same affected area. Authorities caution that conditions may reach Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups (USG), prompting a need for close monitoring. The highest hourly concentrations are expected during the early morning hours when mixing heights are at their lowest.

Winds are projected to increase and shift to northwesterly during the afternoon on Saturday as clean, dry Canadian air filters into the region. This change in weather patterns is expected to lead to a drop in fine particulate levels, bringing air quality comfortably back into the Good Air Quality Index (AQI) range for the weekend.

Residents in the affected areas are advised to stay informed about air quality updates and take necessary precautions, especially during periods of elevated particulate concentrations. Authorities recommend limiting outdoor activities, particularly for individuals who are sensitive to air pollution.

The situation will be closely monitored, and updates will be provided as necessary to ensure the safety and well-being of the public.
