A Baltimore man has received a prison sentence for assaulting a federal law enforcement officer during an incident at a Social Security Administration (SSA) field office. According to information from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Maryland, Demetris White, 44, was sentenced to 18 months in prison and three years of supervised release for his actions.
The charges stem from an event on May 19, 2025, when White visited a Baltimore SSA office to discuss his disability benefit payments. White reportedly became agitated when a customer service representative explained the process for obtaining a replacement debit card, as he had lost his original card and was unable to access his benefits. The situation escalated when White began verbally abusing the representative, prompting them to activate a duress alarm.
Responding security personnel asked White to leave the premises. However, White allegedly continued his aggressive behavior, making threats of physical assault and spitting before exiting the building. Due to the threats made, a federal law enforcement officer was dispatched to the scene. The officer located White outside and attempted to arrest him. White initially resisted the arrest, prompting the officer to display a taser and warn that it would be deployed if the resistance continued. Following this warning, White was handcuffed. While being handcuffed, White forcibly headbutted the officer from behind, causing a laceration to the officer’s lip that resulted in bleeding and swelling.
U.S. Attorney Kelly O. Hayes of the District of Maryland announced the sentence in conjunction with Regional Director Jose Ortiz-Diaz of the U.S. Federal Protective Service (FPS) Philadelphia Office and Norman Jenkins, Special Agent in Charge of the U.S. Social Security Administration Office of Inspector General (SSA-OIG) Philadelphia Field Division. The investigation and prosecution were supported by the Baltimore Police Department.
