Per a press release from the Department of War, applications are now being accepted for the Science, Mathematics, and Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarship-for-Service Program, a crucial initiative aimed at cultivating the next generation of scientists, mathematicians, engineers, and technologists for government service. Managed by the Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Army for Research and Technology (DASA (R&T)), the SMART program is designed to bolster the Department of War’s workforce by integrating highly skilled individuals and enhancing the technical expertise of current employees. This program presents a significant opportunity for STEM students, offering financial support for their education in exchange for a commitment to federal employment after graduation.

The SMART scholarship is available to students pursuing bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees. The comprehensive benefits include full tuition coverage, monthly stipends, health insurance, and allowances for books. Participants also gain invaluable practical experience through immersive summer internships, typically lasting between eight and twelve weeks. Upon completing their studies, scholars are integrated into civilian positions within their sponsoring facilities, bringing with them a robust foundation of knowledge and practical skills acquired during their internships and other work assignments. The Capability Program Executive for Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear Defense (CPE CBRND) joined the SMART program as a sponsoring facility last year and has already welcomed its first two scholars.

STEM students interested in pursuing a career within the United States government are strongly encouraged to explore this opportunity. The SMART program not only benefits students by providing financial assistance and a guaranteed post-graduation job, but it also allows participating government agencies, such as CPE CBRND, to recruit fresh talent. This influx of new expertise is vital for maintaining a dynamic and adaptable workforce capable of addressing complex national security challenges. The application process requires candidates to submit a resume, letters of recommendation, personal statements, and indicate their preferred sponsoring facilities. Applicants will also undergo interviews with potential sponsoring institutions. The deadline for submissions is December 4, 2026, with selected scholars slated to be notified in April 2027 and commencing their programs in May or June of the same year. Further details regarding eligibility criteria and application instructions can be found on the official SMART scholarship website.
