Michael James, the English Department Chair at North Harford High School in Harford County Public Schools, has been recognized as the 2027 Maryland Teacher of the Year. This prestigious award was announced at the 36th Annual Teacher of the Year Gala, where James was selected from a group of seven finalists.
James brings over three decades of experience to the field of education, having served in various capacities including teacher, coach, curriculum writer, and professional development leader across multiple schools. His contributions extend to district workgroups focused on grading, reading, and technology. He also holds leadership roles as the advisor for Voices of Equity and editor of the Misentity magazine. His selection for this honor signifies his dedication to student success and his innovative approaches within the classroom.

The selection process for the Maryland Teacher of the Year involves a comprehensive evaluation of finalists by a panel comprised of principals, educators, students, and families. Candidates are assessed based on their student achievement, teaching philosophy, community engagement, and understanding of current educational issues. As the 2027 Maryland Teacher of the Year, James is set to represent the state in the upcoming National Teacher of the Year competition in the spring. His year will also involve active participation as a speaker and advisor in events organized by the National Teacher of the Year Program.
Other distinguished educators who were finalists for this year’s award included Alison Benkovic from Baltimore County Public Schools, Emily Brynes of Carroll County Public Schools, Kacy Valentine from Howard County Public School System, Clara Allsup of Prince George’s County Public Schools, Alice Tickler representing Queen Anne’s County Public Schools, and Dr. Chelsea Taylor from Wicomico County Public Schools.
