NORTH AMERICAN AEROSPACE DEFENSE COMMAND (NORAD) fighter jets successfully intercepted a general aviation aircraft that entered a temporary flight restriction zone over Thurmont, Maryland, on September 19, 2026. The incident, which occurred around 7:50 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time, involved F-16 fighter aircraft operating under the command of the Continental U.S. NORAD Region (CONR) at Tyndall Air Force Base, Florida.
During the intercept, the NORAD fighter pilots deployed flares to gain the attention of the pilot of the unauthorized aircraft and to establish communication. These flares are designed to burn out quickly and completely, posing no danger to individuals on the ground.
