The Frederick County Sheriff’s Office (FCSO) has announced the arrest of Tavon Jamar Willis, 46, of Frederick, in connection with the 2003 murder of Joshua Wayne Crawford. The arrest follows an indictment by the Frederick County Grand Jury, bringing a conclusion to a case that has remained active for 23 years. Crawford was discovered deceased in his Exeter Court apartment on July 2, 2003, the same day he would have turned 21. An autopsy determined the cause of death to be asphyxiation, along with sharp and blunt force injuries.

The FCSO has maintained an active investigation into Crawford’s murder, pursuing numerous leads and tips over the past two decades. According to the Sheriff’s Office, the diligent work of investigators uncovered significant new evidence that ultimately led to Willis’s apprehension. The Sheriff’s Office stated that while this development cannot alleviate the profound loss experienced by Crawford’s family and friends, they hope it may offer a measure of closure after more than 20 years.

Willis has been transported to the Frederick County Adult Detention Center. He faces multiple charges, including first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, armed robbery, conspiracy to commit armed robbery, robbery, conspiracy to commit robbery, first-degree burglary with intent to commit theft, conspiracy to commit first-degree burglary with intent to commit theft, first-degree burglary with intent to commit a crime of violence, conspiracy to commit first-degree burglary with intent to commit a crime of violence, third-degree burglary, conspiracy to commit third-degree burglary, false imprisonment, and conspiracy to commit false imprisonment. The FCSO has emphasized that this investigation is ongoing.
