NASA Accelerates Plans for First United States Space Academy

Washington D.C. – NASA is rapidly advancing its initiative to establish the nation’s first United States Space Academy, a move aimed at cultivating future aerospace talent and bolstering American leadership in space. This effort follows a recent Executive Order and marks a significant step in building a robust pipeline of skilled professionals for the country’s long-term space ambitions.

NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman led the inaugural meeting of the Presidential Commission on the United States Space Academy on September 9th. Shortly after this meeting, the agency released a Request for Information (RFI) seeking proposals from state governors, or their designated representatives, interested in hosting and supporting the new institution. The RFI signals a nationwide call for collaboration in shaping this foundational element of America’s space future.

The commission, tasked with developing recommendations for President Trump on establishing the academy and developing the necessary technical talent and leadership for sustained space endeavors, commenced its 120-day mandate following the President’s Executive Order on August 28th. The objective is to create a legacy institution that will prepare the next generation of space leaders and professionals.

Key commission members from various government agencies and organizations convened at NASA Headquarters in Washington for collaborative discussions. Participants included U.S. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, Director of the National Economic Council Kevin Hassett, Secretary of the United States Air Force Troy Meink, and U.S. Chief Technology Officer Ethan Klein, who represented the Director of the Office of Science and Technology Policy, Michael Kratsios. Representatives from the U.S. Office of Management and Budget, the National Security Council, and the White House were also present.

During this initial commission meeting, members began outlining the proposed academy’s structure and priorities. These discussions encompassed critical aspects such as governance, curriculum development, service commitments, potential partnerships, and the overall implementation strategy. The location of the academy is considered a fundamental factor in its future success.

States responding to the RFI are being asked to present their most compelling visions for hosting the academy. This includes detailing available infrastructure, potential community partnerships, and the overall ecosystem that can attract and support the caliber of students the academy is intended to serve. The agency is seeking proposals that can compete with elite educational options and match the aspirations of future space leaders.

The RFI responses will play a crucial role in guiding the commission’s process for selecting a location for the institution. The timeline outlined in the request is ambitious, with a target groundbreaking by 2027. The academy aims to temporarily host its initial cohort of 300 students in 2028, with a permanent location intended to be fully operational by 2031.

Each state is permitted to submit one proposal through its governor’s designee. Beyond outlining available resources for the academy’s support, the RFI is soliciting detailed input on potential campus sites. This includes information regarding location, site readiness, environmental and regulatory considerations, and the proximity to supporting industries and academic institutions.
