Governor Wes Moore recently visited Baltimore County as part of his “Delivering for Maryland” initiative, focusing on key areas of investment by the Moore-Miller administration. The tour included announcements and visits aimed at supporting first-time homebuyers, particularly first responders and teachers, engaging with the senior community, and acknowledging the state’s agricultural sector. These visits underscore the administration’s commitment to strengthening communities and providing tangible benefits to Maryland residents across various demographics.
The Governor began his day by addressing the housing needs of essential workers, specifically firefighters, police officers, 9-1-1 dispatchers, and teachers who are looking to purchase their first home. Following a roundtable discussion with first responders at Baltimore County Police Precinct 4, a new loan product under the Maryland Mortgage Program was introduced. This program is designed to make homeownership more accessible for these vital public servants. Additionally, the administration is dedicated to enhancing community resources for Maryland’s growing senior population, evidenced by a tour of the Woodlawn Senior Center, which recently received significant state funding for expansion and modernization. A significant announcement during the tour was the introduction of the “First Homes for First Responders and Teachers” mortgage product. This initiative aims to break down financial barriers for individuals serving critical roles within the community who aspire to own a home. The program offers a reduced interest rate, specifically half a percentage point lower than standard Maryland Mortgage Program rates, and provides substantial assistance with down payment and closing costs, amounting to 5% of the loan value. Applications for this new mortgage product are scheduled to open on Friday, September 4. The Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development administers the Maryland Mortgage Program, which has been a cornerstone of the state’s homeownership assistance efforts, consistently providing over $1 billion in mortgage loan reservations annually. This new product is expected to further bolster the program’s reach and impact.
The Governor’s visit to the Woodlawn Senior Center highlighted the administration’s focus on aging well and supporting older adults. The Woodlawn Senior Center received an $800,000 grant in Fiscal Year 2023 from the Maryland Department of Aging. This funding facilitated significant renovations and expansions, including the addition of dedicated classroom space, improved multipurpose areas, an enlarged kitchen, increased storage capacity, a fitness facility, and enhanced parking to accommodate a broader range of programming. These improvements are part of the Longevity Ready Maryland initiative, the state’s comprehensive plan to address the needs of its aging population and ensure that seniors can remain active and engaged in their communities. The enhancements at the Woodlawn Senior Center are expected to serve as a vital community hub, promoting healthy aging, social interaction, and continued civic participation for many years to come.
Governor Moore concluded his Baltimore County engagements at the Maryland State Fair, participating in the Governor’s Agriculture Day Luncheon. This annual event convenes approximately 200 leaders from Maryland’s agricultural sector, including representatives from the Maryland Department of Agriculture, Soil Conservation Districts, the University of Maryland, 4-H, FFA, fair associations, and various government officials. The luncheon serves as a celebration of the state’s agricultural heritage, innovation, and economic contributions. Governor Moore’s presence underscores the administration’s dedication to supporting farmers and producers, ensuring the vitality and strength of Maryland’s agricultural industry for future generations. Following the luncheon, the Governor explored the State Fairgrounds, taking in the various exhibits and competitions that showcase the breadth of Maryland’s agricultural achievements.
