Pennsylvania Man Receives 57-Month Prison Sentence for Fatal DUI Crash in National Park

A Pennsylvania man has been sentenced to nearly five years in federal prison for his role in a fatal collision that occurred within the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area. According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania, Christopher M. Thomas of Bushkill, Pennsylvania, received a sentence of 57 months imprisonment for homicide by vehicle while driving under the influence. The incident, which resulted in the death of a motorcyclist, highlights the severe consequences of impaired driving, especially in public recreational spaces.

The events leading to the sentencing unfolded in June 2024. Thomas was operating his vehicle while under the influence of methamphetamine within the national recreation area. Approximately 400 feet ahead, several vehicles and two motorcycles had stopped to allow deer to cross the roadway. Thomas, however, failed to stop and instead collided with one of the motorcyclists at a high speed, causing fatal injuries. The motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene. Subsequent forensic analysis of Thomas’s blood revealed the presence of significant levels of amphetamine and methamphetamine.

United States District Judge Karoline Mehlachick imposed the sentence, noting the grave and deadly nature of Thomas’s actions. The judge emphasized the necessity of delivering just punishment for the offense and the importance of deterring Thomas and others from engaging in similar dangerous conduct. The investigation into the incident was a collaborative effort between the National Park Service and the Pennsylvania State Police.
