A Washington County resident has been sentenced to life imprisonment plus an additional 20 years for his role in the fatal shooting of Jamaal Roberts. The sentencing, handed down by Judge Brett Wilson on July 24, 2026, also includes consecutive sentences for probation violations. The defendant, Kevin Wilfred Huling, was found guilty of first-degree murder, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and using a firearm in a crime of violence following a five-day jury trial that concluded on February 27, 2026.
The conviction stems from the events of February 12, 2025, when Jamaal Roberts was fatally shot inside an apartment located near the 7 Star Convenience Store on West Franklin Street. According to the prosecution, Huling had arranged to meet Roberts at the apartment, and shortly after both individuals entered the premises, the defendant discharged a firearm, striking the unarmed victim. Following the incident, Huling fled the scene but was apprehended several hours later, discovered hiding in a closet in an apartment on Wakefield Avenue. At the time of the murder, Huling was already facing warrants for violations of his probation.
