Biometric Gun Safes Sold on Amazon Allow Unauthorized Access

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has announced a recall of approximately 9,100 BBRKIN and MouTec Biometric Gun Safes. This recall is due to a significant defect in the biometric lock mechanism, which can reportedly be accessed by unauthorized individuals, specifically allowing unpaired fingerprints to open the safe in some circumstances. The malfunction poses a serious risk of injury and potentially death to consumers, especially children gaining unauthorized access to any firearms inside.

The affected products are BBRKIN and MouTec Biometric Gun Safes with the model number QHXP029B. These gray steel safes, designed for storing firearms and valuables, measure around 14 inches by 12 inches by 57 inches and include one shelf capable of holding approximately five firearms. The recall encompasses safes with serial numbers ranging from SQC200034980 to SQC202319171. Consumers can find the serial number on a label located in the lower right corner of the safe’s front panel. The brand name, either “MouTec” or “BBRKIN,” is also present on the upper right corner of the front. These safes were sold exclusively on Amazon.com between March 2020 and February 2024, with prices ranging from $260 to $409.

Consumers who have purchased these safes are strongly advised to immediately discontinue use of the biometric function. It is recommended to remove the batteries from the safe and rely solely on the key for accessing and storing firearms. BBRKIN is offering a complimentary repair kit to address this critical security vulnerability. The safes were imported by Jomani International Inc., of Monterey Park, California, and distributed by Ningbo Moyumaoyi Co. Ltd., doing business as BBRKIN, of China.
