Federal Authorities Uncover Widespread SNAP Fraud in Los Angeles Retailers

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food and Nutrition Administration (FNA), in collaboration with Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) and the USDA Office of Inspector General (OIG), has initiated a significant enforcement action targeting numerous retailers in Los Angeles suspected of engaging in Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) fraud. This operation, involving the execution of search warrants and the issuance of formal charge letters, aims to protect taxpayer funds and ensure that vital food assistance benefits reach eligible individuals and families.

The crackdown, which culminated on July 2, 2026, with federal agents executing search warrants at multiple SNAP-authorized retail locations throughout the Los Angeles area, has led to formal accusations against 33 retailers. These retailers are accused of violating SNAP program rules, which include the illegal exchange of benefits for cash and the sale of unauthorized items such as alcohol and tobacco. Specifically, six establishments are alleged to have trafficked SNAP benefits for cash, while 27 others are accused of exchanging these benefits for ineligible products, including various alcoholic beverages, vape devices, and other prohibited goods.

Retailers found guilty of these violations face severe consequences, including the potential for permanent disqualification from the SNAP program and substantial monetary penalties. The FNA emphasizes its commitment to maintaining the integrity of the SNAP program, which serves as a crucial support system for vulnerable Americans. The agency conducts extensive oversight through tens of thousands of retailer evaluations and nearly 50,000 undercover compliance visits annually. The involvement of the OIG and HSI bolsters these efforts by conducting criminal investigations that can lead to charges brought by the U.S. Department of Justice, ensuring that individuals who exploit the program face full legal accountability.
