Maryland Man Sentenced to 15 Months in Prison for Online Threats Targeting Black and Muslim Communities

A Brooklyn, Maryland man has been sentenced to federal prison for making threats transmitted via interstate communication, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Maryland. Raymond Pumphrey, 47, received a 15-month sentence followed by three years of supervised release for his actions, which included hate-filled rhetoric and threats against specific communities and public officials.

The investigation, a collaborative effort between the FBI Baltimore Field Office and the U.S. Secret Service Baltimore Field Office, uncovered a pattern of threatening posts made by Pumphrey on social media platforms, notably YouTube. These posts primarily targeted Black and Muslim communities, advocating for violence and expressing intent to participate in killings. Pumphrey also issued threats against multiple politicians and their families. U.S. Attorney Kelly O. Hayes, Assistant Attorney General Harmeet K. Dhillon of the U.S. Department of Justice Civil Rights Division, and Special Agent in Charge Jimmy Paul of the FBI, along with Special Agent in Charge Brian McDonough of the U.S. Secret Service, announced the sentencing.
