Berkeley County Man Sentenced to Over 14 Years for Drug Trafficking and Manufacturing

MARTINSBURG, WEST VIRGINIA – A Gerrardstown, West Virginia man has been sentenced to 168 months in federal prison for his involvement in a methamphetamine distribution operation that extended from his Berkeley County residence. The case, announced by U.S. Attorney Matthew L. Harvey, also uncovered a clandestine drug laboratory on the property.

The investigation into Joseph Paul Boyer, 34, began when authorities received information that he was selling significant quantities of methamphetamine from his home. A subsequent search warrant executed at the residence led to the seizure of approximately 85 grams of methamphetamine, several marijuana plants, syringes, digital scales, and other drug-related paraphernalia. During a secondary search of the property, law enforcement discovered an active clandestine drug laboratory operating within Boyer’s garage. This discovery resulted in the seizure of fentanyl, methamphetamine, ketamine, and cocaine base.

This prosecution is part of Operation Take Back America, a national initiative by the Department of Justice aimed at dismantling cartels and transnational criminal organizations, combating violent crime, and addressing illegal immigration. Fentanyl, a substance designated by President Donald Trump as a weapon of mass destruction due to its extreme danger, poses a significant threat to public safety, even in small amounts. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Lara Omps-Botteicher on behalf of the government, with U.S. District Judge Gina M. Groh presiding over the proceedings. Investigations were conducted by the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office and the Drug Enforcement Administration, with assistance from the Berkeley County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office.

The federal prison sentence for Joseph Paul Boyer underscores the serious consequences for individuals involved in drug trafficking and manufacturing within the Northern District of West Virginia.
