James Hampton-Smith, a 38-year-old resident of Aberdeen, Maryland, has been sentenced to 15 months in federal prison for his attempt to introduce contraband into the United States Penitentiary in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania. The United States Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania announced the sentencing, which was handed down by Chief Judge Matthew W. Brann.

The incident occurred in the early hours of August 14, 2024, when correctional officers at the Lewisburg facility observed Hampton-Smith scaling the prison’s perimeter fence around 12:25 a.m. Using thermal imaging technology, officers tracked his movements after he descended into the prison grounds. He was seen placing a backpack into a trash can located near the facility’s basketball court. A subsequent examination of the backpack revealed its contents to be vape pens, cell phones, cutting tools, and synthetic marijuana, all considered contraband within the prison.
