A shed fire that occurred on May 9, 2026, at approximately 2:00 p.m. on Mt. Aetna Road in Hagerstown, Washington County, has been preliminarily determined to be accidental in nature, according to the Office of the State Fire Marshal. The fire originated in the interior of a 15×30 wood frame structure that was being used as a chicken coop.

The blaze resulted in an estimated loss of $1,000 for the structure and $500 for its contents. Tragically, seven chickens perished in the incident. No human injuries or displacements were reported. The fire was discovered by the occupant, and the alarm was raised for the Mt. Aetna Volunteer Fire Company. A total of 54 firefighters responded to the single-alarm incident, bringing the fire under control within 15 minutes. The investigation points to a heat lamp as the preliminary cause of the accidental fire.
