In a significant move toward transparency, the Department of War (DOW), with support from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI), is initiating a broad government-wide effort to locate, review, declassify, and publicly release unresolved records and historical documents pertaining to Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAP). This directive stems from President Donald J. Trump’s call to identify and disseminate government files related to alien and extraterrestrial life, UAP, and unidentified flying objects (UFOs). The DOW anticipates releasing new materials on a rolling basis, with batches expected every few weeks, acknowledging the immense scope of this undertaking, which involves coordinating among dozens of agencies and reviewing millions of records, many of which are historical and exist only in paper form.

The materials being made available represent cases where the government has been unable to reach a definitive conclusion regarding the nature of the observed phenomena. This lack of resolution can be attributed to various factors, including insufficient data. The Department of War has expressed its receptiveness to analysis and expertise from the private sector for these unresolved cases. Concurrently, the DOW will continue its separate reporting on UAP cases that have been resolved, in accordance with statutory requirements. This initiative underscores a commitment to pursuing truth and sharing findings with the American public.
The first set of declassified documents, made available on May 8, 2026, includes 161 files. These files are sourced from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and relate to various incidents, though specific dates and locations are not universally detailed in the initial release notes for all entries. The Department of War has stated that this release is a demonstration of the administration’s dedication to unprecedented transparency regarding the government’s understanding of UAP, aiming to address the long-standing public speculation fueled by classified information.
For individuals interested in exploring other historical UAP records, the Department of War directs the public to AARO.mil and the Presidential Unsealing and Reporting System for UAP Encounters (PURSUE). The Department of War’s mission is to provide the necessary military forces to deter conflict and ensure national security.
