For those looking to enhance their preparedness, the Town offers a Citizen Preparedness Guide, available in both English and Spanish, which includes tips for hazard mitigation and planning. This guide can be accessed online through the Town of Leesburg’s official website. Additionally, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) provides an interactive online map that allows users to view floodplain locations across the United States by entering a specific property address. FEMA also offers an educational video that delves into the factors influencing flooding and how to define flood risk. The Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) further supports this initiative with its Virginia Flood Risk Information System (VFRIS), an online tool designed to inform Virginians about potential flood risks to their homes, businesses, and communities.
Residents and property owners are strongly encouraged to consider obtaining flood insurance. For those unsure about their property’s flood risk, an insurance agent at a National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) provider can offer assistance. As Leesburg is an active participant in the NFIP, its residents are eligible for flood insurance, regardless of whether they reside in a designated high-risk flood zone. It is important to note that flood insurance policies typically require a minimum of 30 days to become effective, making it prudent for individuals to explore coverage options well in advance of any potential flood events. Further information regarding Virginia Flood Awareness Week can be found on the DCR’s website.
