Governor Wes Moore has proposed a $3 million investment in the Fiscal Year 2027 budget aimed at stimulating economic development along the Purple Line corridor, according to a press release from the Office of Governor Wes Moore. This proposed funding is earmarked for renovations and the restoration of historic buildings, with the objective of revitalizing local business districts as the Purple Line’s completion draws near. The investment is intended to support exterior upgrades for businesses situated within a half-mile radius of the Montgomery County Purple Line stations, enhancing the visual appeal of existing properties. These facade improvements are expected to cultivate a more attractive and secure commercial environment, thereby encouraging further private investment and ensuring that local businesses are well-positioned to capitalize on the new economic connectivity the Purple Line will provide.

The allocated funds would be managed through the Montgomery Countywide Facade Improvement Program, supporting projects in areas such as Long Branch, which was recently designated as Maryland’s Main Street. Previous initiatives funded by this program include the restoration of the historic Flower Theatre by the Montgomery Housing Partnership, a project that forms part of a broader revitalization strategy for surrounding businesses in Long Branch near the future Purple Line station. The state is also continuing to offer direct financial aid to entrepreneurs most affected by the Purple Line’s construction through the Purple Line Small Business Grant Program. In 2025, the Maryland Department of Transportation provided $2 million in grants to nearly 200 small businesses, offering up to $50,000 per grant for essential operational costs like payroll, rent, utilities, and marketing.
The funding for the Purple Line Small Business Grant Program, established in February 2025, was secured by the Maryland Department of Transportation through a renegotiation of its contract with the Purple Line Transit Partners, an agreement that received approval from Maryland’s Board of Public Works in March 2024. Applications for the first round of 2026 grants became available recently via the Maryland OneStop Portal. The Purple Line, a 16-mile light rail system, is nearing completion, with 88% of its track laid, including all track within Prince George’s County. All 21 stations are currently under construction, and all 28 light rail vehicles are on-site. The project has been a significant economic contributor, employing over 2,000 skilled workers during its construction phase and awarding more than $500 million to socially and economically disadvantaged small businesses for design and construction services.
The proposed investment aims to ensure that local small businesses can benefit from the economic opportunities generated by the Purple Line. By supporting facade improvements, the program seeks to strengthen commercial areas, attract investment, and aid small businesses in thriving, ultimately contributing to the vitality of communities along the transit route. Residents can expect improved aesthetics and a potentially more vibrant commercial landscape in areas adjacent to the Purple Line stations. For small business owners along the corridor, these programs offer tangible support to enhance their storefronts and adapt to the changes brought about by the new transit line, potentially leading to increased foot traffic and sales.
