Elite Treats LLC is voluntarily recalling a single lot of its “Elite Treats Chicken Chips for Dogs” due to potential contamination with Salmonella, as announced by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The recall affects approximately 6-ounce bags of the dog treats, identifiable by lot number 24045 and an expiration date of April 2027 printed on the back of the black and gold packaging. The presence of Salmonella in pet food poses a significant health hazard to animals, potentially causing symptoms such as lethargy, diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Even pets that do not exhibit symptoms can act as carriers, transmitting the bacteria through their feces and saliva, thereby contaminating the home environment. For humans, contact with contaminated products, pets that have consumed the recalled food, or contaminated surfaces can lead to serious illness. Symptoms in humans can include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramping, and fever, with vulnerable populations like the young, elderly, and those with weakened immune systems being at higher risk for severe complications.
Elite Treats LLC has stated that the contamination was identified after a third-party laboratory testing revealed the presence of Salmonella in a related lot of the same product that was not commercially released. While no illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this recall, the company is urging consumers to immediately cease using the affected product. Consumers are advised not to sell or donate the recalled treats and to dispose of them in a manner that prevents access by children, pets, or wildlife. It is crucial to thoroughly wash and sanitize all pet food bowls, utensils, and storage containers that may have come into contact with the recalled product. Furthermore, rigorous handwashing with soap and water after handling the recalled food, pets, or contaminated surfaces is essential to prevent human exposure.
The recalled “Elite Treats Chicken Chips for Dogs” were distributed to Florida Hardware, LLC, which subsequently sold them to feed stores located in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina. Consumers who have purchased the affected product are encouraged to contact Elite Treats LLC for information regarding a refund or replacement. The company can be reached via email at elite.treats@yahoo.com or by phone at 561-901-5310, Monday through Friday, between 8:00 AM and 4:00 PM Eastern Standard Time.
