The alarm was raised just before 2:40 a.m. when a passerby noticed smoke and flames emanating from the residence and attempted to alert the occupants by knocking on doors and windows. Concurrently, an off-duty firefighter from the Ocean City Fire Department, who also volunteers with the Parsonsburg Volunteer Fire Company, arrived at the scene. This firefighter forced entry into the home through a rear door in an attempt to locate anyone inside. While discovering a victim, the firefighter was compelled to exit the structure due to overwhelming smoke, narrowly escaping serious harm. Subsequently, the firefighter was transported by the Maryland State Police Aviation Command to a Baltimore area hospital, where their condition was reported as stable.
Responding units from the Parsonsburg Volunteer Fire Company, supported by surrounding departments, quickly escalated the incident to a two-alarm fire. The blaze rapidly engulfed the two-story home, leading to structural collapses in several sections. Approximately 100 firefighters worked for nearly two hours to bring the fire under control. After the fire was extinguished, the remains of two individuals were discovered within the home. Authorities are awaiting positive identification of the victims and the official determination of the cause of death from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. Investigators have not yet confirmed the presence or functionality of smoke alarms in the residence.
The Maryland State Police are collaborating with the Office of the State Fire Marshal in this investigation, a standard procedure for fatal fire incidents.
