SMITHSBURG, MD – A single-story, single-family home located at 12049 Little Antietam Road in Smithsburg, Washington County, was significantly damaged by an accidental dwelling fire on the evening of February 3, 2026. The incident, which was reported at 8:19 PM, resulted in an estimated $15,000 in damages, with $10,000 attributed to the structure and $5,000 to its contents. The fire displaced three occupants from their residence.

According to information released by the Office of the State Fire Marshal, the blaze was discovered by the owner and was preliminarily determined to have been accidentally caused by a fuel-burning furnace. The Leitersburg Volunteer Fire Company responded to the scene, classifying the incident as a first-alarm fire. Approximately 30 firefighters worked to bring the fire under control within 20 minutes of their arrival.

The residence was equipped with a functioning smoke alarm that activated during the incident. There were no human injuries or deaths reported as a result of the fire. However, tragically, two cats perished in the blaze. Two other animals were transported to Mountain View Animal Hospital for treatment. The affected family is receiving assistance from the American Red Cross.
