The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has publicly urged Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey to cooperate with federal immigration enforcement by honoring ICE arrest detainers for more than 1,360 individuals in the state’s custody. DHS contends that these individuals, identified as “criminal illegal aliens,” pose a public safety risk and that releasing them back into communities puts innocent Americans in danger.
According to DHS, Governor Walz’s administration has not cooperated with ICE since President Trump took office, resulting in the release of approximately 470 individuals with criminal records back into Minnesota. The agency is calling for an end to this practice, advocating for the detainers to be honored to ensure that individuals with criminal charges or convictions are not released from state custody without federal immigration review. DHS highlighted several specific cases to illustrate their concerns, including individuals facing charges related to sex offenses against a child, lewd or lascivious acts with a minor, cruelty toward a child, domestic violence, negligent homicide, and drug trafficking. The agency also cited convictions for making terroristic threats, burglary, and aggravated robbery.
