Subaru of America, Inc. is initiating a safety recall for a specific production run of its 2026 Forester vehicles, according to information submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The recall addresses a potential defect in the rear gate stay brackets, which could lead to the rear gate detaching unexpectedly during use, thereby increasing the risk of injury. Approximately 5,603 vehicles are estimated to be affected by this issue.

The issue stems from the manufacturing process, where vehicles may have been produced with an incorrect or improperly oriented rear gate stay bracket. This discrepancy in installation could compromise the structural integrity of the rear gate, leading to its detachment without prior warning. While Subaru has not received any reports of accidents or injuries related to this defect in the field, the company is taking proactive measures to address the potential safety risk. The problem was first identified during an in-process inspection on October 28, 2025, when a vehicle was found with an incorrect rear gate stay bracket. Subsequent investigations revealed additional vehicles with similar issues on the assembly line and in post-production stages.
Subaru conducted testing to evaluate the potential for detachment under various installation combinations. Although initial cycle testing did not reveal any failures, the manufacturer determined that a more extensive testing program would be necessary to ensure confidence in the results. To expedite market action, Subaru estimated a worst-case scenario, concluding that detachment without warning was a possibility. Consequently, out of an abundance of caution, Subaru decided to proceed with the safety recall. The company confirmed that the manufacturing process for the rear gate stay brackets was corrected on October 28, 2025.
Owners of potentially affected 2026 Subaru Forester vehicles are advised not to drive their vehicles and to park them outside until the necessary repairs can be made. Subaru dealerships will inspect the rear gate stay brackets and replace any faulty components at no cost to the customer. The remedy component differs from the recalled component in that it will be correctly manufactured and installed.
Dealer notification regarding this recall is scheduled to commence on December 19, 2025. Owner notifications are expected to be sent out within 60 days, with the remedy phase beginning around February 16, 2026. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) for affected vehicles will be searchable to determine recall eligibility starting December 20, 2025. Subaru is operating under a general reimbursement plan for any out-of-pocket expenses incurred by owners related to this recall.
