This new entity, the DHS Program Executive Office for Unmanned Aircraft Systems and Counter-Unmanned Aircraft Systems, will be responsible for strategically directing investments in advanced drone and counter-drone systems. Its creation addresses the growing prevalence of drone technology across various sectors and the associated risks. The office is poised to procure technologies capable of countering emerging threats and tactics that could compromise national security.
In its initial phase, the Program Executive Office is finalizing a significant $115 million investment in counter-drone technologies. These resources are designated to bolster security measures for critical upcoming events, including America250, the commemoration of the nation’s 250th anniversary, and the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The investment highlights the importance of safeguarding these large-scale events that celebrate American history and welcome international visitors.
DHS is also actively engaging with the counter-drone industry. The department recently solicited proposals for a substantial $1.5 billion contract vehicle. This contract aims to streamline the acquisition process for advanced counter-drone technologies by various DHS components, such as Customs and Border Protection and Immigration and Customs Enforcement, to better protect their personnel and the public. Furthermore, in December, DHS saw an expansion of its authorities. These broadened powers now permit all departmental components, along with state, local, tribal, and territorial law enforcement agencies and correctional bodies, to more effectively address drone threats.
In a swift move to distribute resources, FEMA recently awarded $250 million in grants for counter-drone capabilities. This represents the fastest non-disaster grant award in the department’s history and will benefit the 11 states hosting FIFA World Cup 2026 matches, as well as the National Capital Region. These grants will equip these areas with essential tools to counter drone-related risks.
