During the apprehension, Perez-Perez reportedly attempted to evade arrest by pushing officers. The DHS statement details that he then used his teeth as a weapon, biting the ICE officer’s hand. The circumstances surrounding Perez-Perez’s initial entry into the United States are noted as unknown, with DHS stating he entered without inspection or parole by an immigration official.
The incident highlights a broader concern within DHS regarding an increase in assaults against its law enforcement personnel. The department reported a significant rise in assaults on ICE officers, describing an 1150% increase. The statement also pointed to an 8000% increase in death threats directed at these officers. This rise in aggressive encounters is presented as the daily reality faced by ICE officers as they carry out their duties.
DHS has attributed some of these escalated encounters, including biting and vehicle ramming incidents, to the influence of “sanctuary politicians.” These officials, according to DHS, are encouraging individuals to resist arrest and evade ICE. This alleged encouragement comes in the form of webinars and resources provided to assist undocumented immigrants in defying ICE operations. Specific examples cited include a webinar hosted by Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on evading arrests, an online video by Representative Dan Goldman advising on plans for ICE encounters, multilingual flyers and resources from Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass on evading arrest, and guides and sanctuary laws from California Governor Gavin Newsom on recognizing, blocking, and defying ICE. DHS has called for a de-escalation of rhetoric from politicians, agitators, and media outlets, urging them to cease promoting violence and resistance against ICE law enforcement.
