Fatal House Fire in Taneytown Prompts Joint Investigation

Authorities are investigating a fatal house fire that occurred in Taneytown, Maryland. The Office of the State Fire Marshal and the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office have launched a joint investigation into the incident, which resulted in the death of one resident and multiple pets.

The Taneytown Volunteer Fire Company initially responded to a call at approximately 4:15 p.m. on Friday, December 12, 2025, at a residence located at 3404 Francis Scott Key Highway. The initial report indicated a possible carbon monoxide-related issue. Upon arrival, emergency personnel discovered a fire within the home that had self-extinguished. The Office of the State Fire Marshal was subsequently called to the scene to conduct a thorough investigation.

During their assessment of the property, investigators found the homeowner deceased in a first-floor bedroom. Tragically, a dog was also discovered deceased in the same room. Further examination of the residence revealed a cat deceased in the dining room and several pet birds deceased in the basement. The victim was transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for an autopsy, the results of which are pending. While the official cause of death is still under investigation, preliminary findings suggest that smoke inhalation may have been a contributing factor. Investigators tentatively believe the deceased to be 84-year-old homeowner Jeanie Shifflett, pending formal identification by the Chief Medical Examiner.

Investigators have determined that the fire originated in the unfinished basement of the home. The specific cause of the fire remains under investigation, with Deputy State Fire Marshals currently exploring accidental causes. Evidence such as extensive soot and smoke throughout the first floor, coupled with cold temperatures in the basement, leads investigators to believe the fire may have occurred overnight. The last known contact with Ms. Shifflett was approximately two days prior to the discovery of the fire. The residence was reportedly equipped with smoke alarms, and it is currently being investigated whether these devices were activated during the incident. The estimated damages to the home and its contents are approximately $150,000.

A joint investigation involving the Office of the State Fire Marshal and local law enforcement is a standard procedure for incidents involving fatalities, underscoring the seriousness of the event. The investigation is ongoing.
